Stephen Gardner Smith Passes Away at His Home HereThis morning occurred the death of Stephen Gardner Smith, at his home 1007 West Adams street of this city. Deceased was born March 21, 1849, and died this morning at 8 o'clock a.m. He was 74 years of age and had been an invalid for years.
Mr. Smith was married to Mary L. Jolleffe on January 9 1866, at Marion, Iowa, and to this union five children were born, only two of whom are now living. They are Frank Smith of Macksburg and Nellie, who resided at home.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Madison county near Winterset and lived there two years, and then moved to Lynn county where they resided four years, and came back to Madison county, near Macksburg and lived there 22 years. But during this time he spent four years in Peru, South America, as superintendent of a big oil works. He then came back and moved to Kansas where they lived for six years, and then moved to Creston where they have resided ever since.
Mr. Smith was a civil war veteran, having served four years with Company A. 13th Iowa Infantry. He was a charter member of the G.A.R. at Macksburg, and a member of the Methodist church of that place.
The funeral will be held Saturday, January 9th at the Methodist church at Macksburg. Rev. L.K. Billingsley, pastor of the M.E. church of this place, will officiate, and interment will be made at Macksburg cemetery.
