Wilson “Bill” Young, 87, went to be with The Lord on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Visitation will be held from 4-6 P.M. on Wednesday, December 27th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, December 28th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Committal with military honors will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, near Van Meter. Memorial contributions may be left to the family for future designation. Bill was born on October 17, 1936 to Earl and Vera (Jennings) Young in Madison County, Iowa. He grew up on the family farm and attended Earlham Schools, graduating with the class of 1956. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. On November 24, 1961 he was united in marriage to Ruth Engelmann of Ranis, Germany. To this union three daughters were born: Carmen, Kim and Stacie.
Bill was a lifelong resident of Madison County and spent most of his working career farming and working at the Farmer’s Co-op in Earlham and also in Winterset. He later worked at Earlham Community Schools where he was the lead custodian until his retirement. He enjoyed becoming a handyman after retirement as he liked helping others and was a very hard worker. Bill was a friend to all and never knew a stranger. His greatest joy was time spent with family and especially his grand kids and great grandkids. Bill was an avid football fan. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing. Bill and Ruth wintered in Brownsville, Texas for many years which gained them many new friends and fond memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Vera Young; brother, Donald Young and sister, Enolia Payne Buck.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Ruth of Earlham; daughters: Carmen (Tim) Strain, Kim (David) Bown, and Stacie Young (Nathan Son); six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Sheryl (Tom) Griffith; brother, Ed (Gail) Young; and a host of extended family and friends that will miss him dearly.
