Afterwards he became a clerk and accountant in a mercantile establishment; then deputy clerk of the District court of Louisa county when the old pioneer Zadock Ingraham was in charge of the office. He was for many years a member of the county board of supervisors. The later years a of his life were devoted to farming and stock raising. He was a member of Triangular lodge, No. 245, A. F. and A. M. Letts, Iowa.

In the year 1843 he was united in marriage with Miss Christina Newell, formerly of Logan county, Ohio. Nine children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy, the others all having grown to maturity. All of these, with his faithful wife, were present during his last illness to minister to his wants. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. T. N. Buchanan of Wapello.
