I did not find a death certificate for Mary A Espy. I did not find an obituary in the Anamosa newspapers for her--however, there were no obituaries for Scotch Grove in the Anamosa newspapers that I looked at.

The 1870 Jones Co. census for Scotch Grove (page 200) shows Robert (he is the postmaster) and Mary A Espy. Mary is 60 years old and born in OHIO. Their daughter, Amanda, is living with them. Amanda was born in Pennsylvania and was 20 years old.

Just a suggestion... Ohio and Pennsylvania border each other. The Espy's and the Bell's could have had relatives on both sides of that border. In 1808, Ohio would have been a wild frontier. Families tried and often failed to settle the frontier. They went back home and tried again later.

You might write the public library in Monticello to see if an obituary appearedin that newspaper for Mary. Mary A Espy b 5/9/1808 and died 5/24/1890
