In 1860 in Mallory Tsp, Clayton County, IA:

John F & Eliza Shields have 10 children living with them.

Eliza is dead by 1870 (have you looked for her in Clayton Co.?).

In 1871, John F Shields marries Fidelia Benadom in Jones Co, IA. I do not know if Benadom is her maiden name or a first marriage....

In 1880/1885, John F Shields could be living with any of his 10 children.

The 1885 census on the Jones Co., IA website is for Jones County only. His daughter, Sarah Beam, is living in KS. I did not she him with her.

The Shields daughters married L J Whitney, John Houstman, Charles Beam, Daniel McBeth (Linn Co., IA) and I believe, one married Jacob Byerly and others.

Perhaps you need to track them all down...
