Mary Jean Kessler, 90, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the Solon Care Center. A private graveside will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City.

Mary was born on February 19, 1933 in Johnson County, IA, the daughter of Walter and Agnes (Rummelhart) Michel. On August 7, 1953 she married Buford F. Kessler in Rock Island, IL; He preceded her in death April 2002. Mary was employed at Alden’s Store until opening her own women’s clothing store “Queen’s Ransom”. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Moose Lodge.

Mary is survived by her four children, Jean Untrauer of Iowa City Jo Ann Hawtrey of Iowa City, Jim Kessler of Salem, OR and Jeff Kessler (Julie) of Solon; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Buford; three brothers, Donald, Richard and Norbert Michel; and son-in-law, Dr. Chuck Hawtrey.
