Joshua Kerschen, 51, of Iowa City, passed away on September 30, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Visitation will be held from 3-6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6, 2023 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Grace Community Church in North Liberty.

Josh was born on September 24, 1972 in Fort Collins, Colorado. The family moved to Kansas where Josh graduated from Andale High School. Following high school, Josh attended Adams State University where he obtained his undergraduate degree…and secretly eloped to marry Deanna Cartwright. They moved to Lawrence so Josh could pursue his dream to earn his master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Kansas. After graduation, the couple then resided in the Dominican Republic from 1997-1999 while serving in the Peace Corps. Josh and Deanna moved to the North Liberty/Iowa City area where he started his 20-year career with Amgen Biotech Company, a job he truly enjoyed.

In his spare time, Josh enjoyed doing anything as long as he was with his people. He was a devoted University of Kansas fan and coached youth club basketball for several years. He was an avid prankster with a great sense of humor, even in the most serious of moments. His thrill for travel and adventure was endless; always pondering on the next trip he could plan for the ones he loved. Josh was an incredible cook and a huge foodie. He loved to make new dishes from scratch that he could share with his family and friends. Every dish he made was truly made with love. Josh had a great appreciation for all forms of music, especially when he could experience it live with his loved ones. Most of all, Josh will be remembered for his exceedingly thoughtful, selfless, kind, and goofy demeanor. There was never a favor too large or a task too big that he wouldn’t take on for the ones he loved. He is one of a kind and his spirit will live on through those whose lives he has touched.

Josh is survived by his loving wife, Deanna; children: Jocoa, Maya, and Coltrae Kerschen; father, Jerry (Rebecca) Kerschen; mother, Toni (John) Schlyer; twin sister, Kelly Walther and siblings: Rob, Nick, Brie and Libby Kerschen, Lea (T.J.) Frevert, Katie (Jason) Havelka, and Evan (Chad) Mies. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Louisa Cartwright and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his niece, Zei Kerschen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the “Kerschen Family” via Venmo to be used towards a foundation of their choice.
