William George Nusser, 78, formerly of 1119 Dill Street, Iowa City and a recent resident of Crestview Nursing Home in West Branch died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a long illness.

Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 4PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City with the Rev. Beverly Hovenkamp officiating. Family Graveside Services have been held at Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be directed to the University of Iowa Foundation for research at the Neurology Department, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics or the First Presbyterian Church.

Bill was born October 23, 1925, the son of William Louis and Mary Rupener Nusser in Iowa City, Iowa. He attended University Elementary and High School and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1949 with a B.A. in General Science. He married Margaret Lynch in Red Oak, Iowa on July 18, 1948.

He began working for his stepfather, Harold “Babe” Hands at Hands Jewelry Store as a salesman in 1948, becoming owner in 1956. During his business career, he was President of River Products Company and had owned Comer’s Pipe and Tobacco, Iowa City Credit Bureau, Josephson’s Jewelers of Iowa City, Clinton, and Moline, Illinois, and Hands Jewelers of Iowa City, Lindale and Westdale Malls in Cedar Rapids. In his later years he developed several real estate companies with holdings in Iowa and Colorado.

Bill served on the Coralville City Council from 1954-1957, the Iowa City Airport Commission from 1957-1961, and was a member of the Iowa City Civil Service Commission from 1966-1980. He was selected as one of two community members to sit on the University of Iowa’s first Civil Rights Commission. He was a Life Member of the UI Alumni Association, having joined its Board of Directors in 1967 and was National President in 1973. He joined the UI Foundation President’s Club in 1975. Bill was active with UI Research Foundation as a director and also served as a director of several of the spin-off ventures of that foundation.

Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, where he had served as an elder, trustee and senior high Sunday school teacher. He was a former member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club and the B.P.O.E. He had served in the US Army during World War II.

Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret, one brother, Steve and his wife Bette Nusser of Greensboro, NC; four children and their families: Mary Nusser and her husband Rick Parker of Ft. Collins, CO, their children Sarah Nusser, Madeline Nusser, and Rich and his wife Christa Parker and their son Ethan Parker; Bill Nusser, Jr. and his wife Betsy Boyd, their children Ross and Charlie Nusser of Iowa City; Sarah Nusser and her husband Michael King, their children Laura and Ben King of Ames, Iowa and Anne (Nusser) and Matt Rizzo and their children Ellie and Frannie Rizzo of Iowa City, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and stepfather.
