Marilyn Nikkel, 88, of Sully, passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at her residence. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home, Pella. Interment will follow in Sully Cemetery. Visitation will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home where the family will be present Thursday afternoon 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials for the Lynnville-Sully Athletic Boosters Club.
Marilyn Nikkel was the youngest of two daughters born to Bert and Esther (Jackson) Ver Dught. She was born Sept. 22, 1935, at Pella. She attended Pella Community Schools. Nov. 3, 1951, she was united in marriage with Lester Nikkel, a son of Marcelis and Annie Nikkel. They were married at Second Reformed Church in Pella, and to this union five children were born: Patricia Elaine, Barry Jay, Leslie Allan, Cherine Gay, and Dorreen Kay. They lived in several places before moving to Les’ father’s farm in 1959, where they farmed for four years. They continued to farm the De Jong farm southwest of Sully until retiring in 1995. Marilyn was a hard worker and milked cows for 35 years while Lester farmed. While farming, Marilyn also worked at various jobs including Pella Corporation, janitor at Lynnville-Sully School, and housekeeper at Super 8.
Marilyn was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Family and friends looked forward to her dried apples, caramel corn, and peanut brittle at Christmas. The grandkids loved visiting the farm and loved to have adventures while spending time with Lester and Marilyn. She loved horses, doing word search, and her dog Annie.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children and their families: Pat (Mark) Norman of Searsboro, Barry (Mary) Nikkel of Prairie City, Leslie Nikkel of Sully, and Dorreen Fisk of Barnes City; son-in-law Michael Schnelle of Laurel; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her sister Norma Weyers of Pella; and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Maurice and Linda Rozendaal of Lynnville.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Lester Nikkel in 2010, her parents Bert and Esther Ver Dught, her in-laws Marcelis and Annie Nikkel, and her daughter Cherine Schnelle.
