Funeral services were held Monday, February 27, for Mrs. G. A. Van Zee of Prairie City, who passed away at her home Friday night, February 24th. The service was held in the First Reformed Church, with Rev. Wm. Rosenberg officiating.
Soloist Ralph De Cook sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Beyond the Sunset,” accompanied by Mrs. De Cook. Organist was Mrs. Wm. Rosenberg. Bearers were Chester Beintema, Durk Beintema, Ed Blom, John De Kock, Anthony A. Van Zee, Anthony Van Zee, Harold Van Zee and Martin W. Van Zee.
Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Ray Brashear and Mrs. Clarence Faidley. Interment was made in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.
Bertha Van Zee, daughter of Durk Beintema and Kathryn Douma was born near the town of Pella, in Marion County, Iowa on March 31, 1881 and departed this life at 8:00 p.m. February 24, 1950 at the age of 68 years, 10 months, and 24 days, after a lingering illness at her home in Prairie City, Iowa.
To this union nine children were born, who with her husband survive her.
The children are Martin, of Edinburg, Texas, Dick, of Prairie City, Iowa, Chester, of Newton, Iowa, William and Mrs. Kathryn Boot of Mitchellville, Iowa, Harry, Raymond, Mrs. Wilma Buitenwerf and Marion, all of Prairie City, Iowa.
She spent her early childhood in the vicinity of Pella and was united in marriage in the year 1900 at the age of 18 years to Govert A. Van Zee at Pella, Iowa.
She is also survived by one brother, Mr. T. D. Beintema of Leighton, Iowa.
Left to mourn her passing are also 23 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. One grandchild preceded her in death. Besides these she leaves a host of other relatives and a large number of friends.
Mrs. Van Zee spent her life in Marion, Mahaska and Jasper Counties. She was a devoted mother and took an active interest in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Having made confession of her Faith in her Lord and Saviour 45 years ago, she remained steadfast until the end.
