Norman Richard Havel, 89, of Prairie City, died Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Unity Point Hospital in Des Moines, following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. The family will be present to receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Interment with military honors will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the Prairie City United Methodist Church, Prairie City Lions Club or the Prairie City American Legion. Norman Richard Havel was born May 24, 1931, in Washington the son of Richard and Matilda (Lasek) Havel. He attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1949. Following high school, Norman enlisted in the United States Army where he served honorably and participated in combat during the Korean Conflict. While in service, he earned the Blue Rifle and two campaign Bronze Service Stars. Upon his return from the service, Norman attended Iowa Wesleyan College for two years and transferred to Iowa State University where he graduated in 1957. He was united in marriage to Patricia Brown on Jan. 10, 1960, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Ainsworth. She preceded him in death in 1998. Norman was later married to Jana Brower in 2000. She preceded him in death in 2018.
Norman taught one year for the Prairie City School District and then went to work at the Prairie City Cooperative until 1965. In 1965, he started a 30-year career with the Bondurant Farmer’s Elevator. He retired from grain management in 1997 but remained active in custom farming. He was an active member of the Prairie City United Methodist Church, Lions Club and American Legion. He served on the board of directors at Land O’Lakes for 10 years. He enjoyed fishing especially at the Lake of the Woods and Lake of the Ozarks. Norman received the International President’s Certificate of Appreciation for his service in the Lions Club, the Certificate of Achievement for outstanding contributions to volunteers in overseas cooperative assistance and the American Legion Certificate of Honor.
Norman is survived by his daughter, Beth Hallerud and husband John of Wheaton, Ill.; grandson, Christian Hallerud of Wheaton, Ill.; stepdaughters, Lene Johnson and Leslie (Dee) Underwood, and their families; sister, Alma Tisinger and husband Paul of Iowa City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia in 1998; wife, Jana in 2018; as well as two brothers, Delbert Havel and wife Carol, and Kenneth Havel and wife Marlene.
