Rites Held For L. E. Gearhart Of Near Ira
Ira – Funeral services for Leslie Enos Gearhart, 75 year old native of Pennsylvania and a resident of this community for many years were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Ira Christian church with the Rev. David E. Arnold officiating.
Mr. Gearhart died Monday in the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines where he recently submitted to a major operation. He had been in failing health for two years.
During the services, a quartet composed of Mrs. Leta Lowry, Mrs. Doris Hunter, James Lowry and Harold De Reus sang, accompanied by Mrs. Coral Esch.
Mrs. Gail Rippey, Mrs. Florence McIntire and Mrs. J. H. Boyd were in charge of the floral tributes and pallbearers were Gilman Castor, Loren Murphy, Lloyd DeReus, Frank Rippey, Will Baker and Orlo Southern. Interment was in the Union Chapel cemetery.
The son of the late Frederick and Sarah Gearhart, Leslie Enos Gearhart was born Jan. 22, 1868, in Pennsylvania, and came to Iowa with his parents at the age of 6 months.
On Feb. 19, 1896, he was united in marriage to Della Castor, who survives.
Other surviving relatives include a nephew, Enos Gibson, who has made his home with the Gearharts since a child; two brothers, William of Omaha, Neb., and Joe of West Des Moines; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Wilson of Port Orchard, Wash., and Mrs. Ella Harrison of Seattle, Wash., and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Thomas and George, and one sister, Martha.
Mr. Gearhart, who with Mrs. Gearhart has resided east of Ira for 47 years, leaves a host of friends to whom he was endeared as a good neighbor and for his jovial disposition.
