John Wendell Jones, eldest son of Sam and Sadie Jones was born in Colfax, Iowa, December 18th, 1914 and passed away June 6th, 1936 at Wilton Junction, Iowa in an auto wreck.
With the exception of three years in Newton and five years at Killduff, John had spent his entire life of 21 years, 5 months, and 15 days in Colfax.
He graduated from the Colfax High School with the class of 1932. During his years in school he took part in the many school activities and excelled in both basketball and football.
John was a member of the Presbyterian church and took particular interest in the Sunday school. He was for several years one of the Boy Scouts and a leader in this work.
Mr. Jones was united in marriage April 5, 1936 at Vinton, Iowa to Miss Hazel I. Livengood of Newton.
He was of a quiet and unassuming disposition but loved and admired by all who knew him.
John was of a studious nature and was completing a course in television this summer and future prospects were unusually bright for him in this line.
Besides his young wife, he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Jones, one sister, Mrs. John Evans Jr. and one brother Edwin Jones at home.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, from the Presbyterian church at 3 p.m. with his pastor Dr. Theodore Morning officiating, assisted by Rev. Sabine of Vinton, Iowa. Interment was in the Colfax cemetery.
Music was provided by Mrs. Earl Plummer, Mrs. George Rinker, H. J. Eastman and Dr. O. S. Fatland with Mrs. S. E. Tennant, accompanist. John A. Davis also sang “Face to Face” as a solo.
Pall Bearers were Lowell Acton, Lloyd McCarty, Bob Bridie, Ronald Gregg, Jim Stouffer and George Paynter. Honorary Pall Bearers were Joe Dluhos, Royal Mindham, Morris Trusler, Hugh Pease, Oliver Mabie, Myron Yochum, Carol Acton, Bob Gregg, Edris Owens and Charles Butler.
