Phyllis Bartlow, 78, of Carlisle, formerly of Oskaloosa, passed away Friday evening, April 3, 2015, at the Carlisle Care Center.

Phyllis Maxine Bartlow was born June 25, 1936, in Monroe, Iowa to Clyde and Evelyn Esther (Edwards) Wilson. She was a 1954 graduate of Monroe High School. She married John Elmer Bartlow, March 20, 1955, in Monroe. Phyllis and Elmer became foster parents to Penny and Lloyd Hartman in 1963.

Phyllis worked for the Monroe Mirror newspaper, as a cook at several restaurants, and finally at Pella Corp., from which she retired in 1991. Later in her life she attended Des Moines Area Community College, from which she earned her degree in computer studies.

Over the years she lived in Monroe, Oskaloosa, Des Moines, and Carlisle, Iowa; also Unionville, Missouri and Jackson, Mississippi.

In her early years, Phyllis enjoyed reading, camping with her family and sewing. She loved cooking, collecting and reading cookbooks, collecting cookie jars and bells and computer games.

Phyllis’ surviving family includes her foster children, Penny Hartman of Oskaloosa and Lloyd Hartman of Des Moines; several foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margie (Ron) Dotson of Mountain Home AR; and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John Elmer on April 13, 1993.

As was her wish, her body has been cremated. Burial will be at Rochester Cemetery, Scott Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
