Maxine L. Brubaker, 91, died Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Nye Legacy Care Center in Fremont, Neb.

Maxine was born Feb. 27, 1924, to Thomas and Floy Bowers in Grinnell. She graduated from Montezuma High School and attended college at the University of Northern Iowa. After college, Maxine worked for the Maytag Corporation. Maxine Bowers married Doyle Brubaker June 23, 1957, in Malcom. After marrying Doyle, she became a secretary at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Newton. After she retired, Maxine altered clothing for friends, family, and others during her free time.

Maxine was active in organizations such as the United Methodist Women, Martha Circle, the chat-a-bit club, and Eastern Star. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir and serving on many committees. Maxine loved square dancing and camping with her husband Doyle, gardening and tending to her flower garden, traveling and antiquing. She enjoyed going with her husband to the annual Swap Meet and Tractor Show in Waukee, and attending the Old Thrashers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant every Labor Day. Maxine especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter Karen (Carter) Burnside of Fremont, Neb.; grandchildren, Cassie, Sherise and Jake Burnside; brother Dean Bowers of Des Moines; sisters-in-law Vivian Brubaker of Bettendorf and Opal Goodrich of West Union; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family.

Preced Maxine in death are her beloved husband Doyle; and parents, Tom and Floy Bowers. Memorials have been established to the First United Methodist Church in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 12 at First United Methodist Church in Newton. Pastor Gary Marzholf will be officiating.
