Shirley was born July 7, 1928 to Floyd and Pearl Poland in Marshalltown, Iowa. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1946 and married her high school sweetheart William (Bill) Isgrig on August 11, 1948. Shirley worked at the telephone company, as well as at the high school cafeteria and Dr. Stegman's office. Bill and Shirley made their home in Marshalltown their entire lives, raising six children in the most loving and supporting way. They were the heart and soul of each other and of their family. "Willie" and Shirley were inseparable. And they modeled family values by how they worked, how they laughed, how they loved, how they treated each other and in the kindness shared with everyone they knew. Their home was a place of ongoing family gatherings, often with games of Trivial Pursuit or dominoes taking place in earnest -- and always with Shirley's "out of this world" homemade pies at center stage. Shirley's first priority and first love were Willie, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, as well as her loving sister Norma.

Bill and Shirley were members of the Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. They enjoyed their morning coffee gatherings at Hy-Vee. And Shirley was active with her school classmates, having social times together often. She was also a dedicated member at the MMSC Fitness and Rehab Center. She and Willie enjoyed attending their children's and grandchildren's activities and watching golf (if Tiger was playing). And Shirley liked her New Orleans Saints and quarterback Drew Brees. Bill passed away in 2005, after 56 years of marriage. In May of 2013, Shirley suffered a severe stroke. Since that time, she resided at Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Marshalltown. There she received great care from the staff and daily care and love from daughter Kathy. Family members gathered there often, with Shirley's selflessness and kindness still evident--and always to be remembered. Care Initiative Hospice provided valued support.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bill (Willie), and her parents Floyd and Pearl Poland. She is survived by her sister Norma Poland of Marshalltown; sons David (Nancy) of Pleasantville, Jeffrey (Ann) of Newton, and Joel (Tim Smith) of Giddings, Texas; daughters Kathy Hilderbrand of Marshalltown, Kristy (Dan) Grinstead of Iowa City, and Kelli Isgrig (Bob Buresh) of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren Jennifer (Levi) Tipton, Trey, Tanner, Carrie Grinstead (Ronnie Collender), Katie (Eric) Williams, Jon (Stephanie), Ryan (Stephannie), Dustin (Jillisa) Haunsperger, and Alex Haunsperger (Jesse Buchanan); great grandchildren Isabella, Evan, Lincoln, Amelia, Nolan, Ava, Ronen, Luna, and Baby Tipton. ~ The Des Moines Register Legacy, Des Moines, Iowa 6 Apr 2015.
