John “Dale” Tipton, 90 of Baxter passed away with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter. Visitation will be Saturday, April 4 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation and begin at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ with Pastor Wanda Seydel officiating. A private family burial will follow at Restland Cemetery in Baxter.

On June 2, 1924, Dale was born on the family farm South of Baxter, the son of Milo and Emma (Pleshek) Tipton. Due to the early death of his mother, he spent his early childhood in Silver City, New Mexico. He then returned to Baxter at the age of 9, to live with his grandparents, John and Audrey Tipton. Dale graduated from high school in 1942, and soon after, enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

He fought in World War II aboard the USS Rathburne. The ship was a destroyer, later converted to a high-speed transport, which carried underwater demolition teams in the Pacific. On April 27, 1945 while on patrol off Hagushi, the ship was hit by a kamikaze. After temporary repairs, the ship headed back to San Diego. After his discharge, he attended school at Simpson College and AIB, majoring in bookkeeping.

On Dec. 29, 1950, Dale was united in marriage to Joanne Lois Krampe. They became parents of Sally Jo, Christine Jane and Nancy Claire.

Dale was employed at Chicago Great Western Railroad, Swift Packing House, and later retired from Lennox Industries in 1988. During their marriage, Dale enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the 50 states, the Canadian territories and Germany. They loved dancing, listening to music, wintering in Arizona, and going to Hawkeye football games. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, arrowhead and mushroom hunting. His building skills helped out many projects around town, whether it was erecting Habitat homes in the area or being a “sidewalk supervisor.”

Dale was especially proud of his 70 year membership to the Legion. He belonged to Bethany Church, where he enjoyed being “knotty” tying quilts. He also belonged to the VFW. He and Joanne supported the Baxter School by establishing the Tipton/Krampe Scholarship.

He is survived by his daughters, Sally Anderson, Chris Tipton and Nancy Taylor; his sister Betty (Ted) Bodley; granddaughters Robyn Anderson (Jason and Kyle Flora), Renae Anderson, and Hannah Taylor; and grandson Joseph Taylor; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Mary; wife Joanne; and sons-in-law Calvin Anderson and David Taylor.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the family so they can make multiple donations to Dale’s favorite local charities in his memory.
