Moffitt, Clara Celia Allen – 1868-1941

Hold Rites for Mrs. C. Moffitt, 73, of Newton
Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Moffitt, 73, were conducted at the Morgan Funeral home Sunday afternoon with interment following in the Newton Union cemetery. The Christian Science service was conducted by Ralph Erlanson of Des Moines.
Pallbearers were Maurice Moffitt, Marc Hickman, Morris Hickman, H. L. Moffitt, Guy Rinehart and Marion Moffitt.
Flowers were arranged by Mrs. Maurice Rodgers and Mrs. E. E. Jackson. A. Eugene Burton sang “O Gentle Presence” and “Like as a Mother” accompanied by Lois Hundling.
Clara Celia Allen was born at Colfax, Ia., June 3, 1868 – the daughter of W. W. and Dora Belle Allen who have both preceded her in death.
She attended the Colfax schools and graduated from Valparaiso University at Valparaiso, Ind., in 1892. She kept in touch with her class throughout the years with a class letter. After her graduation, she taught elocution in the Colfax school.
In 1895 she was united in marriage to Elias H. Moffitt who died in 1915. Three children were born to this union, Virgil, who died at birth, Cecil Elias Moffitt and Mrs. R. F. Brewer of Newton. She is survived by her son and daughter, and four grand daughters, Winifred, Celia and Victoria Eckey and Marilyn Moffitt. A younger brother, Everette M. Allen, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Moffitt was active in the Christian Science church, a member of the Daughters of Union Veterans and a charter member of the Sugar Grove Grange.
