Mrs. Lewis Anthony
Mattie J. Raines was born April 15, 1875, in Lee county, Iowa and died June 25, 1941, at the age of 66 years, two months, and 10 days, the youngest of four children.
Her girlhood days were spent in and around Croton, Iowa. On October 9, 1895 she was married to Lewis Anthony, also of Lee county, where they lived for some five years. Moving then to Plattsmouth, Nebr. three children – Tom, Eugene, and Fern were born. Then after returning to their Croton home, they resided for four years. They came to Jasper county in 1909 where they have since resided and their ten children were grown to maturity.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Merle Hitchler, two sons George and Rollin, and three brothers.
She is survived by her husband and nine children: Dewey, Tom, Eugene, Francis, Mrs. J. A. Coffman, and Mrs. Donovan Emmack, all of Newton; Mrs. Carl Danley and Mrs. George Danley of Des Moines, Iowa; and Mrs. Clifford Woody of Reasnor, Ia., and twenty-three grandchildren and four great grandchildren,
For the last 22 years the family has resided six miles southwest of Newton, her husband being engaged in the operation of Newton’s electric powered water system.
Her paramount ambition as seen by her friends was to teach her children the requirements of life, to instruct them along the lines of moral duty, and prepare them for the time when each must stand alone.
Mrs. Anthony was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and an honorary member of the Helping Hand Club.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at the Murdoch Funeral home by Rev. Osgood. Interment as in the Palo Alto cemetery.
Pallbearers were Dale Emmack, Arthur Watt, Fred Engle, Jr., Pat Healy, Clarence Dammeier and A. J. Coffman.
Music was furnished by Minnie Gerhart and Mrs. F. E. McClean, who were accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson.
