Nellie Beavers

Nellie Elizabeth Beavers, daughter of William and Susannah Elm (Vinzant) Berndt was born in Mercer, Missouri on November 5, 1913, and passed away on December 10, 2001, at the Westview Acres Nursing Home in Leon, Iowa, at the age of 88 years.

Nellie was united in marriage to Newell Beavers on August 31, 1935. Newell preceded her in death on October 19th, 1994. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jimmy Beavers; a daughter-in-law, Christine Beavers; her sister, May Little; and by seven brothers, Perry, Stephen, Earl, Hubert, David, Dale, and Paul Berndt. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Owens (and son-in-law, Wayne) of Leon, Iowa; two sons, Max Beavers (and daughter-in-law Betty) of Colfax, Iowa, and Johnny Beavers of Boerne, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Dolores Beavers of Huntsville, Missouri; one brother, William Berndt (and sister-in-law Lois)of Des Moines, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Hazel Berndt, Betty Berndt, and Arlene Sims, all of Mercer Missouri; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren, and by several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Nellie was raised in Mercer, Missouri. For several years she and Newell lived on their farm, northwest of Lineville, Iowa, where Nellie worked as a cook in local restaurants. In 1971, they moved to Leon, Iowa, where she worked as a nurses' aid at the Decatur County Hospital, retiring in 1978.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 13, 2001, at the Greenlee Middleton Funeral Chapel in Lineville, Iowa, with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Burial was at McKinney Cemetery northwest of Mercer, Missouri. ~ The Jasper County Tribune, Colfax, Iowa, December 20, 2001
