Dorothy S. Smith, age 95, of Colfax died Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Careage of Newton in Newton, Iowa. Funeral mass was held Saturday, October 6, 2001 at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. The Reverend Phil Cardenzana officiated.

Burial was in Garden Grove Cemetery in Garden Grove, Iowa. Memorials may be donated to the Dorothy S. Smith Memorial fund which will be given to the Colfax Senior Center or towards a park bench in memory of Dorothy at Careage of Newton.

Dorothy Smith was born January 6, 1906 in rural Garden Grove Township, Decatur County, Iowa the daughter of Burt and Margaret Etna (Mullen) Stiles. She attended rural school until she finished grade school. She graduated from Decatur High School in May of 1923. She also graduated from Drake University and taught elementary school in the Garden Grove area for over 31 years. She was united in marriage to Howard O. Smith on May 4, 1929 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Dorothy moved to Colfax after her retirement in 1965 and lived here until she went to Careage of Newton in 1996. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. She was also a life member of the Iowa State Education Association and National Retired Teachers Association. Dorothy is survived by two sons, Frederick C. Smith and his wife Joyce of Dubuque, Iowa and Burt W. Smith and his wife Joan of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Helen Smith of Colfax; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1962, a son Richard in 1986 and the sister Mary Jane Hitt. ~The Jasper County Tribune, October 11, 2001
