Alice M. Schroyer, 81, of Baxter died Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with Father William Reynolds and Deacon Dan Goetz officiating. A rosary will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Following the visitation, there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery in Baxter.
Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Baxter Education Foundation may be left at the church. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.
The daughter of Bernard and Frances (Jansen) Stalzer, Alice was born July 3, 1929, in Haverhill, Iowa, where she was raised. Alice attended school in Haverhill and Van Cleave before graduating from St. Mary’s High School in Marshalltown. She was united in marriage to Jerry Schroyer on Jan. 4, 1954, in Haverhill.
After she and Jerry were married they made their home in Newton. In 1958, they moved to Baxter. She was a homemaker and also co-owner and bookkeeper for Mid-State Construction.
Alice was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Red Hat Ladies, the Sweet Adelines out of Marshalltown and the Ever Ready Club. She had also served as a board member for the Baxter Education Foundation and was a 30 year official for Jasper County elections.
Alice enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and tatting. She enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren crafts. Alice was a good cook and enjoyed having big family dinners for holidays and birthdays.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Schroyer of Baxter; three daughters, Jone (Larry) Birkenholtz of Newton, Ann (Steve) Ratliff of Newton and Janet (Dave) Deaton of Baxter; a son, Mike (Patty) Schroyer of Baxter; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five siblings, Evelyn Kopel of Haverhill, Helen Wafer of Davenport, Leon Stalzer of Haverhill, Jeanette (Harlan) Kloppenborg of State Center and Don (Judy) Stalzer of Haverhill; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, Richard Stalzer, Harold Stalzer, Ruth Kopel, Mildred Kurtz and Doris Edler.
