The daughter of Hubert and Flossie (Wood) Marshall, Catharine was born on March 13, 1925, in rural Monroe. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1944. She was united in marriage to Edward Harold Johnson on Oct. 21, 1944, at the Monroe United Methodist Church. After graduation, Catharine worked at the Maytag Company. Later, in addition to being a full-time mother, she found time to do the farm census in 1959 and maintained Elk Rock State Park for the Iowa Conservation Commission. Catharine’s hands were magic. With them she wove a kaleidoscope of memories to be shared and passed on.
Those left to honor her memory are her children, Lloyd Johnson, and his partner Byrd Bettis of Los Angeles, Calif., Laurel Johnson and his wife, Korena, of Zachary, La., LaVon Roth and her husband, Stephen, of Newton, LuAnn DeHaan and her husband, Doug, of Otley, and Linda Van Hemert and her husband, Lyle, of Sioux Falls, S.D., 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Herb, and his wife, Betty Marshall, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and sister-in-law Marlys Marshall of Alta, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edward, in 2005; and a brother, Paul.
