Irving E. Thompson, 82, of Newton died Saturday, Nov. 6, at Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing in Newton.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at the First Assembly of God Church in Newton with Pastor Raymond Boothe officiating. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials to the First Assembly of God Church to be used for “Light For The Lost” may be left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service.
The son of Louis Martin and Ellen Marie (Christensen) Thompson, Irving was born April 16, 1928, in Marshalltown, Iowa. He attended Marshalltown High School, and he was united in marriage to Cleo Fern Thompson on Dec. 28, 1949, in Leon, Iowa.
Irving grew up in Marshalltown and had lived in Newton since 1949. He was a factory worker for the Maytag Company for 30 years, retiring in 1979, and he was a member of the Newton Assembly of God Church, where he was a Light For The Lost Councilman and Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Local UAW 997.
Irving is survived by his son, Rick (Paula) Thompson of Plano, Texas; four daughters, Sheila (Nolan) Kelsey of Newton, Connie Thompson of Newton, Becky (Dennis) Danley of Garden Grove and Sherry (Mark) Williams of Altoona; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Patricia Thompson of Marshalltown and Catherine Fonken of Marshalltown; a sister-in-law, Twila Thompson of Bondurant; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Max (JoAnn) Lockwood of Westminster, Colo., Orville (Twyla) Kost of Clio and Dorothy Lockwood of Westminster, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fern Thompson, in 2003; his sisters, Louise LeVora and Lillian Thompson; and a brother, Lawrence Thompson.
