Bernard “Bernie” Relph, 70, of Colfax died from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Hospice of Jasper County in Newton.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Colfax, with burial following at McKeever Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, at the church with family present to greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. There will be a vigil service following the visitation at 7:30 p.m.

The son of George and Emma (Hull) Relph, Bernie was born on April 19, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was a graduate of Russell High School. On May 28, 1960 Bernie was united in marriage with Jean Malone in Chariton, Iowa. Bernie spent 33 years as a dedicated employee for John Deere. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Bernie also had a love for woodworking and playing golf. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Colfax.
Those left to honor Bernie’s memory are his wife of 50 years, Jean Relph of Colfax; four children, Brian (Theresa) Relph of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Julie (Randy) Behr of Marion, Iowa; Kari (Dennis) Engholm of Portland, Oregon; and Diane (Kent) Van Wyngarden of Clive, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, and two brothers, Richard (Lola) Relph of Marshalltown, Iowa; and Gail (Agnes) Relph of Valeria, Iowa. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Keith and Doyle Relph, and one granddaughter, Clare Engholm.
