James E. "Gene" Smith

James E. "Gene" Smith, age 72 of Colfax, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001 at his home from a heart ailment. Mass of Christian Burial was held June 15, 2001 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax, Iowa, with the Reverend Philip Cardenzana officiating. Burial was at the Colfax Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to James E. "Gene" Smith Memorial Fund.

Gene Smith was born June 5, 1929, the son of Irving and Elsie (Berst) Smith in Charles City, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Donna Mae Teed on January 1, 1955 in Colfax, Iowa. Gene had worked at the Ford Motor Company, The City of Colfax and was a supervisor at the Waste Treatment Center in Pleasant Hill until his retirement. He also served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a longtime member of the UAW and also a supporter of the Democratic Party.

He is survived by his wife at home, three daughters, Teresa Routh of Des Moines, Patricia Harrell of Tripoli and Elizabeth Smith of Mitchellville; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Mark and Connie Smith of Bondurant, Jerome Smith of Colfax, Andrew and Krsitina Smith of Colfax and Anthony Smith of Newton. Also surviving are two brothers, Stanley and Alfred Smith and 22 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant granddaughter, Hazel Rose Smith. ~ The Jasper County tribune, June 21, 2001
