Robert L. Mahl, 82, of Little Falls, Minn., formerly of Davenport, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, at the Diamond Willow Nursing Home in Little Falls, Minn.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Vrankin of First Lutheran Church in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends following the burial with a coffee time at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
The son of Wilhelm and Johanna Mahl, Robert was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Newton, Iowa. He attended Augustana College and also served in the United States Navy. He was united in marriage to Norma Lee McVey on Aug. 15, 1953, in Rock Island, Ill.
Robert grew up in Newton, Iowa, and after his marriage to Norma McVey, lived most of his life in Davenport, Iowa. He was a draftsman and mechanical engineer, working for various companies in the Quad Cities over the years, including Kartridge Pak, Alcoa and International Harvester and finally retiring from CDI Corporation, where he was working as a consultant on site at Alcoa.
While serving in the United States Navy, he was a participant in Operation Crossroads and served aboard the Prinz Eugen, a captured German ship. His participation allowed him to witness the first atomic test performed in the Bikini Atoll Islands in the Pacific Ocean in 1946.
Survivors include three daughters, Patrice Madison of Little Falls, Minn., Paula (Arthur) Cherry of Little Falls, Minn., and Peggy L. (Mark F.) Rockstroh of Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Robert (Joyce) Mahl of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and David (Tami) Mahl of Davenport; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life for 58 years, his wife, Norma Mahl. He was bereft by the loss of his lifetime partner in March 2010 and has since longed to be with her again in heaven.
