Dorothy J. Hill, 85, of Newton, formerly of Baxter, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, at her home in Park Centre in Newton.

A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Pastor David Rex officiating. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today, Oct. 29, at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery.

Memorials to Garden View at Park Centre or to the family may be left at the funeral home.
Survivors include a son, Richard I. (Connie) Hill of Baxter; two daughters, Linda R. (Dave) Schafer of Baxter and Jan J. (Chuck) Deckard of Altoona, Iowa; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Helen Guthrie and Donna Shuey; three half-sisters, Margaret Broeffle, Shirley Huffaker and Karen Allsup; her aunt, Mardelle Allgood of Oskaloosa; and her Garden View family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tillie (Holtsclaw) and Robert Brittain and Carl Preston; a half-sister, Minnie Morris; and a son-in-law, Ed Westendorf.

Those left to honor Dorothy’s memory are her son, Richard (Connie) Hill of Baxter; 2 daughters, Linda (David) Schafer of Baxter and Jan (Chuck) Deckard of Altoona; her 5 grandchildren, Joel (Rynda) Westendorf of Altoona, Skye Westendorf (Bob Lantry) of Newton, Chad (Mandy) Hill of Bellevue, Nebraska, Stacie (Nick) Bunse of Newton, and Shawn O’Connor of Newton; 10 great-grandchildren, Jessica (Jordon), Melissa (Aubrey Bailey), Aaryn, Danica, Jandi, Westen, Aaron, Bryce, Brianna, and Nicole; a great-great-granddaughter, Alexys and another great-great-grandchild due in the spring of 2011; and an honorary son, Jeff Cain of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are her 2 sisters, Helen Guthrie of Ames and Donna Shuey of Rhodes, 3 half-sisters, Margaret Broeffle of Newton, Shirley Huffaker of Baxter, and Karen Allsup of Bondurant, her aunt, Mardelle Allgood of Oskaloosa and her Garden View family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Hill, Jr. on June 29, 2007; her parents, Tillie (Holtsclaw) and Robert Brittain and Carl Preston; a half-sister, Minnie Morris; and a son-in-law, Ed Westendorf.

Dorothy attended school in Baxter but in her senior year, a family move resulted in her graduating from Rhodes High School in the class of 1942. She was united in marriage to Raymond J. Hill, Jr. on August 8, 1945 in Pipestone, MN. Always a working mother, Dorothy began working for Ted and Ruth Warner at the Baxter Sale Barn as the auctioneer’s clerk. In 1965, Dorothy went to work at Al Nuzum Supply Co. in the office until 1973 when the company was sold to Archer-Daniels-Midland. She remained with this company until her retirement in 1988. Retirement was not a time of rest for Dorothy and Ray. Dorothy’s sewing skills were essential as she helped Ray build airplanes and many times she could be found as the 2nd pair of hands on any airplane being built, rebuilt, or repaired. They were lifetime members of the Airplane Association. Dorothy assisted in the Airpower Museum Gift Shop where her tasks were varied including buying merchandise, store displays, and selling during the annual fly-ins held at the Antique Airfield in Blakesburg, IA. Dorothy’s own hobbies kept her busy as she was proficient in anything she attempted from knitting, cross-stitching, and quilting to wood-crafts, painting and anything in between. Many of her projects were displayed at county and state fairs and more often were sporting blue ribbons. She and Ray enjoyed the years they were able to travel to various airplane fly-ins and meetings around the Midwest and were grateful to friends, Ron and Margy Sieck, who took over the driving as the years passed.
