Joel Dodge Dies in California
Was Pioneer Settler of Jasper County and Lived North of Newton For Many Years
Word comes to relatives here of the death of Joel Dodge who died Thursday evening at his home in Los Angeles, California, where he has resided for the past five years.
He has been in ailing health for several months due to his advanced age. For the past couple of weeks his daughter, Miss Dorothy Dodge, who is a student at the State University at Madison, Wisconsin, has been with him.
Mr. Dodge is a pioneer of Newton for years lived on a farm north of town which is now operated by his son Wallace. He was a power in his community and one of the leading agriculturists of the early days.
During the Civil war he served with Company I Tenth Iowa Infantry and while in service he was wounded.
Mr. Dodge leaves his widow and children, Mrs. Annie Kerr, of Postville, Iowa; Mrs. Flora Smith, of Groton, New York; Arthur Dodge of Casper, Wyoming; Edith Robb, of Dodge City, Kansas; Mrs. Bess Parsons, of Newton; Mrs. Mabel McFalls, of New Westminister, British Columbia, Canada, Mrs. Imogene Wormley, of Newton; Wallace Dodge of Newton; and Dorothy Dodge of Madison, Wisconsin.
No definite funeral arrangements have yet been announced but it is thought that he will be buried Wednesday. The body is expected in Newton Wednesday.
