Death of Mother Hickman
Died, in this city, Tuesday May 25th, Mrs. Margaret Hickman, age 77 years, 8 months and 22 days. Margaret Moffitt was born near Chillicothe, Ohio, September 3rd 1819. When about one year old she moved with her parents to Randolph county, Indiana and was married Sept. 10th, 1837 to Samuel Hickman. In the fall of 1852 they moved to this county where they resided on their farm, three miles west of Newton, until the spring of 1893, since which time she has resided in this city. Mrs. Samuel Hickman was brought up in the Quaker faith but about fifty three years ago she united with the M. E. church of which she has continued during all these years to be an earnest member. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hickman, four sons and two daughters, five of whom survive, Mr. E. M. Hickman, of Seward, Nebraska, A. M. Hickman, of this city, Mrs. P. J. Hickman, also of this place, Mrs. L. A. Whitmore, of Muscatine and Z. N. Hickman of Newton. All except E. M. were with her when the summons came. Mrs. Hickman was a kind, lovable lady and had many friends. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Cowan.
