Lester Schmitt Services Held Tuesday, Sept. 24

Lester Towner Schmitt, 85, of Colfax, a longtime resident of the Monroe and Reasnor communities, died Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax.

The Rev. Eldon Nolte, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Colfax, conducted services. Burial was in the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe.

Pat Evans was the organist.

Casket bearers were Jacob Schut, Richard Meckley, George Zugg, Jack Jackson, Richard Hansen, and Brian Townsend.

Survivors are a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, and two sisters.

Mr. Schmitt, a longtime Monroe and Reasnor area farmer, had moved to Monroe in 1947, where he did garden work at various Monroe residences until moving to Colfax.

The son of Philip and Minnie Steinhilber Schmitt, he was born Nov. 15, 1899 near Colfax.

He was married to Augusta Hummel in February, 1941, in Des Moines. ~ The Jasper County Tribune, 1985
