Blackwood, Mrs. Walter - 1883-1933

Murphy, March 28 – Special to The Daily News – Mrs. Walter E. Blackwood, daughter of Williard and Jacoba Van Wyngarden, was born near Pella, Ia., Aug. 25, 1883, and died March 22, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo., where she had been taking treatment, at the age of 49 years, six months and 27 days.
She was married to Walter E. Blackwood March 25, 1908, and to this union four children were born, William D., Freda C., Eldon E., and Lola Jean, all at home.
Surviving relatives, besides her husband and children, include five sisters, Mrs. Jennie Beyer and Mrs. Emma Ulrich of Pella, Mrs. Mamie Rouze of Newton, Mrs. Evelyn Allen of Jefferson City, Mo., and Mrs. Margaret Obermeier of Independence, Mo., and three brothers, Dr. Rudolph Van Wyngarden of Mexico, Mo., and John and Walter Van Wyngarden of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mrs. Anna Grace Newton.
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, March 24, at 2:30 o’clock from the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal church by Rev. J. B. Pritchard, pastor. Interment was in the cemetery near by.
Music for the services was furnished by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Fred Welle, Mrs. David Welle, Emmett Van Dalen and James Van Baren, with Mrs. Ray Livingston as accompanist. They sang “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Going Down the Valley.”
Six nephews of Mrs. Blackwood served as pallbearers, the group including Rudolph Ulrich, Loren and Merrill Murphy, Wilber and Bernard Van Wyngarden, and Rozelle Blackwood. Mrs. Walter Bishop, Mrs. Harry Thompson, and Mrs. Thomas Clark were in charge of the flowers.
Those attending the services from a distance were Mrs. Jennie Beyer and daughter, Edna, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Beyer, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Veenstra and Mr. and Mrs. John Ulrich and Thelma and Rudolph, all of Pella; R. E. Blackwood of Chicago; Lettica Blackwood and Edna Wickham of Nevada, Mrs. Eva Rippey of Ira and Clarence Reynolds, LeRoy Porter, John Agnew and Russell McLaughlin, of Still College at Des Moines.
