Wife and Mother Fatally Injured in Run-A-Way
After suffering greatly from internal injuries, sustained in a run-a-way accident which occurred about half after six last evening, Mrs. Andrew Emmert died at 2 o’clock this morning at their home northeast of Newton.
Her husband also is suffering from serious injuries received at the time of the accident. He would not go to bed until this morning and it is not known just how serious his injuries will prove to be.
Mr. and Mrs. Emmert were driving from Kellogg to their home and when about half way between the S. H. Newell’s and their home, the horse was frightened by a dog, which it is said jumped over a fence, and Mr. Emmert could no nothing to stop him. This was a family horse. The children drove it and it was considered very safe.
One of the boys in the Emmert home saw the accident. He went to the place where the injured father and mother lay and then rode on his wheel to the S. H. Newell home to get Mr. Newell to take them home in his auto.
Dr. J. C. Hill and a doctor from Kellogg were called at once but nothing could save the life of the mother in the home.
Mrs. Emmert leaves one little daughter, Dorothy, who yesterday celebrated her 10th birthday anniversary. A sad, sad incident to carry with the usually happy day all the rest of her life.
The oldest son, Teddy, lives with his grandmother, and then there are Earl, Lee, Everett and Lowell. The youngest is about seven years of age.
Sad isn’t it. A living, tender mother in a happy home yesterday. Today that same home is surrounded by clouds so dark, so dreary, that it takes great nerve and will power and, faith in something we know so little about, to bear up under it.
Mrs. Emmert was Miss Lela Drew, a daughter of Mrs. A. E. Drew, southeast of Newton, and a sister of Messrs. Frank and Charles Drew.
Mr. Emmert is a brother of Phil Emmert and Mrs. Will Dennis of this city.
