Gertrude Thornton Services Held Feb. 17

Funeral services for Gertrude M. Taylor Thornton, 85, of Prairie City, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at the Church of the Brethren, south of Prairie City.

The Rev. Timothy Peter, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Harold Schutte of Oskaloosa, conducted services. Burial was in Griffis Cemetery near Prairie City.

She died Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors are three sons, two daughters, 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, husband, two brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. Thornton had taught rural Percy, Swan and Prairie City schools and in Newton, Carlisle, Runnells and Colfax schools, from which she retired from teaching. ~ The Jasper County Tribune, Thursday, February 20, 1992
