Gone to Rest – The quiet of last Sabbath morning was broken by the sad tolling of the church bell, announcing the death of Mr. C. D. Hipsley. The news was not unexpected to our people, as the deceased was known for some time to be rapidly nearing death’s door, but the shock was not less great for having been expected. For the past four years Mr. Hipsley has been a constant sufferer from a combination of diseases. Something over a year ago he had a stroke of paralysis and since which time has been almost constantly confined to his home. Almost two weeks ago he had a second stroke, from the effects of which no earthly hand could restore him, and gradually sank away until death came, on last Saturday evening, and freed him from his sufferings.
Father Hipsley was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, September 2d, 1816, hence was 63 years and 3 months old at the time of his death. He removed to Knox county, Ohio, in 1837, where he remained until about twenty-one years ago, when he removed with his family to Iowa, settling in this city where he has resided up to the time of his death – by his uniformily upright, honorable and Christian character, winning the highest place in the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens. Since he was 20 years of age his occupation has been that of teaching, in which calling he has been eminently successful. He was elected for two successive terms, by the Republicans, to the office of Superintendent of Schools in this county, and in all his four years’ official relations was faithful to every trust, and under his guidance our schools were brought up to a high state of perfection.
In 1840, he was converted and united with the Protestant Methodist church, and remained a faithful and consistent worker in the Master’s vineyard, until he was called to come up higher and receive his reward.
In 1844 he was married in Knox Co., Ohio, to Sarah Newell, who died four years afterward, leaving two children, one dying in infancy, the other, Mr. J. J. Hipsley, is now a resident of Avoca, this State. In 1850, he was again married to Catharine S. Davis, who for nearly thirty years has shared alike his sorrows and rejoicings, and whose heart is now bowed in grief at the loss of a kind and loving companion. His daughter Alice, the only child from his last marriage, was the constant, faithful and untiring attendant of her father during his long and tedious illness, and her grief is only known to those who have like her been robbed by death of a kind, tender and indulgent father. Mr. Thomas D. Hipsley, of Fairview township, this county, and Miss Mary Hipsley, living near Monroe, were brother and sister of the deceased. The funeral services were held at the residence at 10 o’clock Monday morning, conducted by Rev. F. W. Evans, pastor of the M. E. Church.
