Elmer E. Stevens, 57, of rural Newton, a resident of Newton since 1927, died Friday evening, April 28, at the Skiff Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1:0 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at Toland-Wallace Funeral Home in Newton.

Elder Glen Oswalt conducted services. Burial was in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Claudia; two sons, Dennis of Jacksonville, Florida, and Edward of Killduff; a daughter, Mrs. John (Judy) Roby of Princeton; five grandchildren; two brothers, Bert and Clarence, both of Newton; and a sister, Mrs. Les (Florence) Hanson of Tampa, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers.

Mr. Stevens was an employee of the Vernon Company.

The son of Thomas O. and Louise Christy Stevens, he was born October 17, 1920, at Bidwell.

He was married to Claudia Winton August 27, 1945, at Moline, Illinois.

He was a brother of the late Claude and Milo Stevens of Colfax. ~ The Jasper County Tribune, May 4, 1978
