Art Lister Dies Sunday
Long Time Jasper County Resident Succumbs
Arthur Lister, nearly 77, died at the Skiff memorial hospital at 80’clock Sunday morning.
He was born in England and moved to Philadelphia when two month old. He was quarantined on the boat upon arrival into port, due to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. His parents and he remained in Philadelphia for about three years and then moved to the farm south of Newton known as the Lister farm. His father built the old Lister Opera house which stood for many years on the site of the John Monroe car lot.
He grew to manhood on the farm and since that time has owned a number of grocery stores in various places in the United States and Canada. Also he was employed in the woolen mills in the east owned by his brother. He was a former advertising and publicity manager at the Lister shows. The first motorcycle in this part of the country was owned by him and he was a champion cyclist.
During later years he operated a small grocery store in the building now occupied by the Monarch Retail Repair shop, until his health would permit it no longer. Since the time of his retirement he has lived in and near Newton.
He is survived by one living brother, Thomas H. Lister, of Colfax and a sister, Mrs. E. H. Jennings, also several nieces and nephews in the east, Tama and Des Moines.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Morgan Funeral home at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Frank M. Bliss officiating. Burial will be made in the Newton Union cemetery.
