The following is the obituary read by Dr. Charles B. Hankins:
Mary Lavina Stratton was born in Mercer, Ohio, June 2, 1860. She departed this life on Tuesday, March 14, 1922 being aged at the time of death sixty-one years, nine months and fourteen days. In 1870 she moved with her parents to Iowa. On Sept. 2, 1897 she was united in marriage to Arthur W. Stratton. To this union were born six children, three of whom died in infancy. Those left to mourn her loss are Harry Strattan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mrs. Nelson Murdock of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Elmer Rood of Gilman, Iowa. Besides these children she leaves seven grandchildren and her devoted companion.
Mr. and Mrs. Strattan with their family moved to Newton in 1894 (sic) where she spent the remaining years of her life. Mrs. Strattan when but a young girl gave herself to Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of which she remained a faithful member to the day of her death. She was a beautiful Christian character, loving and kind and a blessing to all who knew her. She is comforted while we are sorrowing. Her going away leaves a place in our hearts that can never be filled.
