OBITUARY
NICHOLS.
Martha Jane Carpenter was born at Orwell, Oswego County, N. Y., Jan. 19, 1837, and died at the home of her son, Jerome C. Nichols, Jan. 2, 1917. She was united in marriage to James Nichols at West Union, Iowa in June, 1866. The husband passed away March 2nd, 1896. To this union three children were born, viz: Jerome C., of Cresco, Irwin H., of Lime Springs, and one daughter, who died in infancy.
Mrs. Nichols was of Revolutionary descent—her grandfather, Richard Hilton, having served in the Continental army. She was also one of Howard County’s pioneers, having settled on a homestead with her father, James Carpenter, in Albion Twp. In 1856, later they moved to New Oregon, and during her residence there she was converted and united with the Methodist Church at that place and has since lived the life of a true Christian, and died triumphant in the faith. She always lead{sic} a quiet home life and was a mother in the true sense of the word. Such a life, though its sphere of activity be over, is worthy to be called noble.
The deceased is survived by her two sons; a step-son, J. H. Nichols, of Bonair, Iowa; six grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. J. B. Mitchell, of Cresco, who is the only one left of a family of seven children.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Kirwin at the home Thursday afternoon. Burial at New Oregon cemetery.
