ACKLEY-Richard A. Gerdes, 72, of Ackley died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Services will be held Wednesday, June 5 at 10:30 a.m. at East Friesland Presbyterian Church in Ackley with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Randy Russon will officiate. Military rites will be provided by Elliot-Keninger No. 252, of Ackley
Richard was born July 26, 1929, in Cleves to George and Bena Kuper Gerdes. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. On Dec. 14, 1957, he married Darlene Oelmann at Hampton and they farmed. He was a member of East Friesland Presbyterian Church and the Elliot-Keninger American Legion Post No. 252, of Ackley.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; two sons, Kirk of Cumming, Ga., and Ken and wife Donna of Santa Clarita, Calif.; two daughters, Lisa Ubben and husband Randy of Aplington and Gina Gerdes and her friend, Kent Ubben, of Aplington; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Zacharius, of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Virgil Zacharius.
Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley is in charge of arrangements.
