BOONE-Robert L. "Pinky" Clifton, 71, of Boone died of cancer Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Services will be held Wednesday, May 29 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone with burial in Grand Ridge Cemetery north of Beaver. Rev. Dawn Carder and Dr. Richard Harken will officiate
Robert was born Sept. 5, 1930, in Ogden to Elmer and Vera Hansen Clifton. He graduated from Boone High School where he led his team to a state championship in football. On Sept. 7, 1950, he married Dorothy Barrow in Boone. He was offered a scholarship to the University of Iowa where he received many honors in football. After graduation he served in the United States Air Force and then returned to get his master's degree while working as a member of the freshman coaching staff at the University. He returned to Boone where he taught for four years, then served as principal at Madras, Ore., for four years. Returning to Iowa he was high school principal at Ackley-Geneva for 22 years. He retired in 1990 and in March 2001, the couple moved back to Boone.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boone and Ackley. He was a lifelong member of the Masons, the Boone Golf and Country Club, the Elk's Club, American Legion, University of Iowa Alumni Association, a former member of the Ackley Lions Club and Ackley Country Club. His hobbies were golfing, woodworking and watching football and basketball, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Boone; a son Chris and his wife, Karen, of Cranston, R.I.; a daughter Dondee Stearns and husband, Craig, of Liberty, Mo.; a foster son Carl Teske and wife, Anne, of Waterloo; five grandchildren; a sister June Warden and husband, Arthur, of Moline, Ill.; a brother Dale Cox and wife, Bonnie, of Boone. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Curtis Cox; an infant daughter Lou Ann; and a grandson, Casey Clifton.
Stark-Welin Funeral home of Boone was in charge of arrangements.
