STEAMBOAT ROCK-Calvin Jerry DeVries, 65, of Steamboat Rock, died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls following a sudden illness. Funeral services were Monday, April 29, at the First Methodist Church in Eldora, with Pastor Bruce Baillie of the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock officiating. Interment was at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery.
Calvin was born Sept. 24, 1936, in Aplington, son of Thomas and Ella Mae Reints DeVries. He was a 1954 graduate of Dumont High School and a 1961 graduate of the Iowa State School of Veterinarian Medicine. He moved to Eldora in 1961 and joined Dr. R.R. Griffel. They became partners in 1964. On Feb. 23, 1980, Cal married Susan Dardis at the Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock. He was active in the community, serving on the Eldora City Council for six years and on the chamber board for two years. He taught Sunday school for 10 years at the Methodist Church and coached little league for 11 years.
He is survived by his wife, Suzie, of Steamboat Rock; two sons, Douglas and his wife, Amy, of Anamosa, and Paul and his wife, Beth, of Ames; a daughter, Debra and her husband, Gary Oles, of Jacksonville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Curt, Ashley, Zachary, Elizabeth, Daniel and Jacob; and two sisters Phyllis and her husband, Lester Muller, of Oelwein, and Della and her husband, Jim Peters, of Eldora. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sons, Tom and David; and a granddaughter, Sarah Oles.
