UNION-Frieda M. Newby, 78, of Union, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Grandview Heights Care Center in Marshalltown. Services will be held Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Union Community Church with burial in the Union Cemetery. Rev. Rick Schill will officiate.

Frieda was born Dec. 10, 1923, at Granger, to Harry and Winnetta Herrold Haywood. She graduated from Union High School and attended Ellsworth Community College for one year and later graduated from Drake University. On Dec. 22, 1945, she married Keith Newby in Union. Frieda taught elementary education for more than 40 years in several schools, including Union/Whitten. She was a member of the Union Community Church, the Iowa State Education Association and enjoyed gardening and 4-H.

She is survived by three sons, Kenneth of Union, Kirby and wife, Carol, of LeGrand, and Keene and wife, Lois, of Gilman; a daughter-in-law, Laura Newby of Conrad; a sister, Corrine Martin and husband, Dale, of Union; four brothers, LaVerne Haywood, and wife, Erma, of Eldora, Charles Haywood and wife, Betty, and Arvin Haywood, and wife, Carolyn, all of Union, and George Haywood and wife, Elaine, of Rhodes; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Keith, in 1993.

Biersborn Funeral Home of Union is in charge of arrangements.
