Obituary
Tosten Tostenson was born August 3, 1833, at Amoe, near Stavanger, Norway, and died at Jewell, Iowa, Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, at the age of 76 years, 1 month, and 24 days. He came to America 45 years ago, settling near Marengo, in Iowa county, Iowa, where he made his home for forty years. Just before leaving the home of his birth for America, he was united in marriage to Miss Bertha Dagfindson, of Masteroe, near Stavanger, Norway, his bride coming with him to this country that has been adopted as the home of so many sturdy immigrants from the land of Mr. Tostenson's nativity.
To Mr. and Mrs. Tostenson but two children were born, two daughters, one of whom died in infancy, and the other, Mrs. John O. L. Johnson of Jewell, still survives. Five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Tostenson came to Jewell to make their home with their daughter, and it was at the J. O. L. Johnson home death came to Mr. Tostenson a week ago last Monday. The wife still survives the husband. One sister of Mr. Tostenson, living in the old country, also survives.
The funeral services were held last Saturday, from the Johnson home at one-thirty, and from Bethesda Norwegian Lutheran church at two o'clock. The church was most beautifully decorated by the friends. Miss Rebecca Johnson and Mr. Lawrence each sang a solo, with Miss Emma Knudson accompanying at the organ. Rev. Lohre delivered the funeral address in English and Mr. J. K. Kasperson, of Eagle Grove, spoke in Norwegian. Interment was made in Evergreen cemetery at Jewell.
Those from out of town who were present at the funeral services were a niece, Mrs. Knute Martinson, and her son, of Iowa county, and Peter Martinson and Miss Bertha Martinson, of Roland, relatives of Mrs. Tostenson, and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Jacobson, of Iowa county.
The bereaved survivors have the sincere sympathy of hosts of friends in Jewell and vicinity in their loss.
