OLIVER S. TEMPLER DEAD

One of the Oldest Settlers of Hamilton County Passed Away Last Monday.

RESIDED HERE NEARLY 40 YEARS

Oliver S. Tampler, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Hamilton county, died at the age of sixty-nine years, nine months and twenty six days, at his home, five miles south-east of Jewell, Monday, June 5th, 1905, of a complication of diseases. Mr. Templer had bedfast for some time and his death was not entirely unexpected.

He was born in Schenectady county, New York, August 10, 1835. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Templer. Two other sons were also born to Mr. and Mrs. Templer--Wm., the youngest who still survives, and D. D. C. who died in November, 1897. Oliver first came to Hamilton county in 1857 and worked for his uncles, Henry and George Staley for one year, then he went to Polk county and worked for other parties. In 1860 he left with a party for the mining regions of Colorado, driving an ox team all the way a distance of over 600 miles from the Missouri river. He remained in Colorado until the fall of 1863, when he returned to Hamilton county again. The next spring he again decided to return to Colorado. He was accompanied on his return by his brother, D. D. C., and Wm. Merrill, taking with them a team of horses and supplies. In the fall of 1865 he returned to his old home in New York state where he spent the winter. In the spring of 1866 he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Pinckney, an old school-mate and with his brother, William, he then returned to Iowa and located on a farm in Hardin county near Iowa Falls where they resided for two years when they removed to Hamilton county and located on the farm where the family still reside. He is survived by a wife, two sons, two daughters, one step son, and one brother, all of whom reside in this county.

The services were held at the family residence south-east of town Wednesday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Rev. DeWitt, of the M. E. church, and the remains were followed to their last resting places by a large concourse of relatives friends and neighbors. The floral tributes were many and very beautiful.
