Tragedy marred a celebration of community pride, kinship and family values this weekend, leaving members of the Western Dubuque schools community grasping to make sense of the loss of four young lives abruptly cut short Saturday afternoon.

Sean Kenneally, Mitchell Kluesner, Nicholas Kramer and Bryce Wilwert, all 14 years old, spent Saturday morning tossing water balloons from the school wrestlers' float in the Epworth Town & Country Days parade. After the parade, the four teenagers' utility vehicle was struck by a pickup truck, and all four young men were killed.

Drexler Middle School Principal Mary Jane Maher said the boys were best friends, highly active, loved the outdoors, were friends with everyone, popular, positive kids, outgoing, the kind of kids teachers love to have in class, enjoyed being involved, and enjoyed being with each other.

"All four boys were very good kids, with great personalities, who got along with everybody at the school," said Doug Koerperich, dean of students and athletic director at Drexler Middle School, Farley, where the teenagers had graduated from eighth grade this spring.

Maher said, "It doesn't just affect one town, it affects a lot of communities," Maher said. "Everybody in the community is going to have some connection to these students' families and extended families."

Jeff Corkery, superintendent with Western Dubuque County Community Schools, called the accident "something that is unimaginable."
