PEOSTA, Iowa - Joseph J. McDermott, 54, of Peosta, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at 2:40 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of Joe may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 26, 2015, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Saturday, June 27th, at St. John the Baptist Church in Peosta, Iowa.

Services for Joe will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 27, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Church in Peosta, Iowa. Burial will be held in St., John's Cemetery in Placid, Iowa.

He was born May 23, 1961, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Calvin "Jim" and Marien I. (Bruggeman) McDermott and was raised on the family farm in Placid, Iowa. He received his education in the EPP School in Placid and graduated in 1979 from the Western Dubuque High School in Epworth. On June 30, 1984, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Sherrill, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Cindy Nauman. He was currently employed at the Western Dubuque Biodiesel plant in Farley, Iowa, after he spent many years farming on the family farm.

Well known as "Papa Joe," he could always get arise out of the youngsters. Joe loved Cindy's home cooking and will forever be a farmer at heart.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy McDermott, of Peosta; two children, Amber McDermott (& a special friend, Jonathon Gotto), of Epworth, and Shannon McDermott, of Peosta; one granddaughter, Gabriella Rose; eight siblings, Gerald (Anita) McDermott, Kathy (Dennis) Soppe, both of Farley, Alphonse "Alan" (Eileen) McDermott, Mark "Burrhead" (Mary) McDermott, Laura Bergfeld, William McDermott, Marilyn (Bill) Weber, and Matthew McDermott, all of Epworth; his father and mother-in-law, Merlin and Pat Nauman, of Sherrill; brothers and sisters- in-laws, Terry (Cathy) Nauman, of Dubuque, Sandy (Steve) Klein, of Peosta, Tim (Chris) Nauman, of Robins, along with many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Edward McDermott, on May 17, 1970.

A Joseph J. McDermott memorial fund has been established.
