HOLY CROSS, Iowa - Robert W. Potter, 67, of 39828 Hogan Road, Guttenberg, rural Holy Cross, died at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, just as he lived, surrounded by his family, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement's Cemetery, Bankston. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1935, in Potosi, Wis., son of Clyde A. and Mary L. (Standorf) Potter.

He married Nancy Delaney on Oct. 12, 1957, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1989. He later married JoAnn Settle on Aug. 21, 1992, in Dubuque.

He received his education in the Wamfley Country school and the Beetown school.

Mr. Potter worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years, retiring on April 30, 1990. He also owned and operated the former Bob's Standard on Dodge, and Bob's Shell on Third and Locust. He farmed in Epworth and Holy Cross. He owned and operated Bob's Sanitation Service. He later started "Bob's Trucking" livestock hauling and also drove a school bus for the Western Dubuque School District. He and JoAnn then started B and J Printing in Holy Cross. He later owned and operated Potter Trucking.

He was a member of St. Clement's Parish, Bankston, its Altar and Rosary Society and the United Automobile Workers Local 94, of Dubuque, where he also served as steward for many years. He also was a former member of the Orioles, of Dubuque.

Bob enjoyed watching the NASCAR and Busch racing events, and enjoyed his many fishing expeditions with his friends and family.

Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Potter, of Guttenberg; 10 children, Peggy (Joe ) Reiff and Sally Potter, both of Cascade, Pamela Ernzen and Terrance Potter (and special friend, Lisa Demmer), both of Holy Cross, Susanne (John) Cody and David (Jessica) Potter, both of Dubuque, Richard Potter, of Charleston, S.C., Rodney (Sandy) Potter, of South Bend, Ind., Rebecca (Reginald) Bradley, of White's Creek, Tenn., and Kenneth Potter, of Guttenberg; five stepchildren, Tina (Mike) Weber, of Earlville, Chuck Settle, of New Vienna, Jason Settle, of Sherrill, Kevin Settle, of Guttenberg, and Suzan (Donald) Corter, of Tulary, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Catherine Steffen, of New Vienna; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia (Keith) Miles and Wanda Gansemer, both of Cassville, Wis., and Lavetta "Skip" Hixson, of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; and a constant companion, his dog, "Misty."

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jean Buss and Lavonne Fortner.

A Robert W. Potter Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Bob would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Amy; the Holy Cross Ambulance Service; The Finley Hospital Emergency Room Department, Respiratory Department and the entire staff for all the care and compassion and support given to Bob and our family.
