BANKSTON, Iowa - Sylvester C. "Vessie" Pins, 80, of 27826 New Vienna Road, Bankston, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in St. Clement's Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Farley Post 656. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m., a Farley American Legion Service at 7 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Pins farmed all of his life in the rural Bankston area.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1924, in Worthington, son of Emil and Kathryn (Muller) Pins. He married Rosemary Heiberger on Sept. 20, 1949, at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston.

He was a graduate of St. Clement's High School, Bankston.

He was an Army veteran, having served during World War II.

He was a member of St. Clement's Parish, Bankston, its Altar and Rosary Society, the American Legion, Farley Post 656, and the Knights of Columbus Council 2001 of Farley.

Vessie was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed his family, especially going to his children's and grandchildren's ball games. He was very active and enjoyed playing cards and golfing.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Pins, of Bankston; six children, Mary Sue (Gene) Schultz and Nancy (Ron) Drees, both of Earlville, Donald (Kim) Pins, Tom (Carrie) Pins and Mark (Barb) Pins, all of Dubuque, and Janet (Joe) Kluesner, of Bankston; 18 grandchildren, Allison and Melissa Schultz, Brian, Kaitlyn and Rachel Pins, Jeremy, Jayme, Becky and Danny Drees, Kristin, Kevin, Michael, Amy, Ryan and Luke Kluesner, Joseph and Megan Pins and Max Pins; three brothers, Germain "Jerry" (Eileen) Pins, of Dubuque, and Ambrose (Duanne) Pins and Clement (Betty) Pins, both of Bankston; two sisters, Mary Jane Kluesner, of Dyersville, and Ann (Merle) Johnson, of Sherrill; and brothers and sisters-in-law, John Heiberger, of Epworth, Elaine (Emmet) Klein, of Dubuque, Eleanor (Celestine) Sigwarth, of Balltown, and Loyola Morgan, of National City, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marie, in infancy; a brother, Eugene Pins, in infancy; two brothers-in-law, Francis Kluesner and Howard Morgan; and a sister-in-law, Eileen Heiberger.

A Sylvester C. Pins Memorial Fund has been established.

The family of Sylvester C. Pins would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, Dr. Holm, Dr. Khatib, Dr. Baer, the nurses and staff at Mercy Medical Center Three West and the Wendt Center at The Finley Hospital, and the Oncology Department at Medical Associates for all their excellent care and compassion given to Vessie and our family.
