BANKSTON, Iowa - Leonard J. Phillips, 78, of 24312 New Vienna Road, Bankston (rural Epworth), died at 11:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Clement's Catholic Church, Bankston, with the Rev. Walter Phillips and the Homilist Rev. Paul Weiff officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m.

He owned and operated the former General Store in Bankston, and was also a construction contractor. He served as mayor of Bankston since 1984.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1922, in Seneca, Kan., son of Joseph and Clara (Vondenkamp) Phillips.

He married Frances Heisler on Oct. 1, 1945, at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque; she died on March 3, 1974. He later married Ann Kirk-Ginter on May 29, 1976, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dickeyville, Wis.

He was a member of St. Clement's Parish, Bankston, and a member of its holy name society. He was also a member of the Farley Knights of Columbus Council 2001 and a member of the 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly 1573 of Dubuque. He was also a member of Rolling Knolls Golf Course in Dyersville and a Thursday night league member. He enjoyed golfing and traveling and visiting with friends and family.

Surviving are his wife, Ann Phillips, of Bankston; his children, Richard (Margie) Phillips, of Austin, Texas, Donna (David) Schueller, of Peosta, David Phillips, of Phoenix, Ariz., Daniel (Becky) Phillips, of Farley, Darlene (Jerome) Glatczak, of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Brother Andre Hotchkiss, a foster child of Kenya, Africa; 28 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Arthur (Dorothy) Phillips, of New Vienna, Vera (Bill) Knudson and Zita (Melvin) Bergman, both of Seneca, Kan., the Rev. Walter Phillips. of Ogallala, Neb., Elda (Ativus) Haverkamp, of Wetmore, Kan. and Lyle (Peggy) Phillips, of Kansas City; his wife's children, Ken (Deb) Ginter, of Dubuque, Russell (Vicki) Ginter, of Kieler, Wis., Elaine (Dobie) Dobbratz, of Lake Mills, Wis., Bruce Ginter (and friend Dee), of Sun Prairie, Wis., Jeneice (David) Haessig, of Long Lake, Wis., Bill (Peg) Ginter and Teresa (Paul) Davis, both of Dubuque, Marvin (Lori) Ginter, of Epworth, and Lois Ginter ( and friend Mark Bryan), of Madison, Wis.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, William Phillips, on May 26, 1983; two grandchildren, Karen Phillips, on Dec. 4, 1980, and Kelli Jo Phillips, on March 2, 1999, and a brother, Regis Phillips.

Memorials for Leonard may be given to Divine Word Seminary, Epworth, and to Hills and Dales Child Development Center, 1011 Davis St., Dubuque, Iowa 52001.

The family of Leonard would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and certified nurses assistants that gave Leonard such wonderful care during his illness.
